Reading together as a family has become one of our most cherished traditions. We call it our “Family Book Club,” and every day we set aside time to read aloud to our kids. It’s a simple but powerful way to connect, share stories, and create lasting memories. Recently, our Family Book Club took on The Wild Robot trilogy by Peter Brown, and it was an unforgettable experience for all of us. For those unfamiliar with the series, The Wild Robot follows Roz, a robot who finds herself stranded on a remote island. Through her adventures, she learns about survival, community, and love in a story that’s both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The trilogy—The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects—takes readers on a journey full of excitement, emotional depth, and important life lessons.
Our older kids, ages 7 and 5, were absolutely captivated by Roz and her adventures. Each evening, they eagerly asked, “Are we reading tonight?” They connected with the characters, laughed at the humorous moments, and even teared up during the heartfelt ones. Their enthusiasm carried over into other parts of our day, as they made sure we had the book on car trips so we could keep reading together wherever we went. As parents, my husband and I were equally drawn in. The themes of family, resilience, and kindness resonated deeply with us, and we found ourselves reflecting on the lessons alongside our kids.
One of the most exciting parts of reading the trilogy was the anticipation of the movie adaptation. After finishing the books, we watched the movie together, and it was so much fun to see the characters come to life on screen. While the movie was incredible and a visual treat, the whole family enjoyed the book more. The connection we built with the story and characters through reading was much deeper, and we found ourselves a little disappointed with some of the on-screen changes. That said, I still highly recommend watching the movie as a family. It’s a fantastic opportunity to compare the two versions, discuss the differences, and help your kids develop critical thinking skills. These teachable moments not only instill a love of reading but also encourage thoughtful conversations about storytelling and adaptation.
Beyond the joy of the story, this tradition has brought numerous learning benefits for our kids. It has helped improve their listening skills, expanded their vocabulary, and sparked their imaginations. It’s also a wonderful way to model the value of reading, which we hope will stay with them for years to come.
I can’t recommend starting a Family Book Club enough. Many families already have bedtime reading routines, but there’s something special about choosing a book that everyone can enjoy together. It promotes family togetherness, encourages meaningful conversations, and creates shared experiences that bring you closer. Our kids look forward to it every day, and my husband and I love having an activity that helps us connect as a family.
If you’re looking for your next Family Book Club read, The Wild Robot trilogy is a fantastic choice. Whether you have little ones or older kids, these books have something for everyone. Happy reading!
Bonus Tip: The Kindle Made It Easy!

We got the first book from the library (ended up buying it later), but we absolutely couldn’t wait to dive into the second and third books. Although they weren’t included with Kindle Unlimited, they were worth every penny to purchase so we could keep reading without delay. Having them on Kindle made it incredibly convenient to read wherever we went, whether at home, in the car, or waiting at appointments. The ease of using the Kindle and/or Kindle app is something I highly recommend if you’re starting a Family Book Club or looking for a great read aloud for your classroom!
